Threshold Edition #7
I loved so well (I wrote you a love song)
Charlotte Saint Cullen
I loved so well (I wrote you a love song) by Charlotte Saint Cullen is now available to purchase through Threshold Editions. This work sits alongside Cullen’s two works exhibited in Sharp Edges: I loved so well (I’m lost but I’m hopeful), 2025 and I loved so well (I believe in life after love), 2025.
The sculpture has been made by using a plasma cutter to hand cut each individual copy of the edition from sheet steel. Each sculpture in this varied edition has its own unique form and carved marks - produced through working with a plasma cutter to cut and draw into the metal. Faux pearl earrings pierce the sculpture at different points. The molten mark making of the plasma cutter, a metalworking machine that uses electricity to melt through sheet metal, has become a signature element of Cullen’s work, bringing sculpture making and drawing into dialogue. Working with metalworking processes like plasma cutting part of Cullen’s research into the histories of labour:
The noise, dirt and physical assertion of the metal workshop
gives me a feeling of connection to past labour, this tangible link to my grandfather and uncles working at Stanton Irons works. On reflection, outside of the workshop, this can feel like dress up, something removed from the absolute cacophony, dirt, heat and physical labour of the industry. But in that space my bones feel alive to the action, I can feel the heritage of that labour living in me.
(Charlotte Saint Cullen)
Each of the 10 copies of this edition are slightly different as they are all hand cut. The three examples in the photographs above give a sense of this variation. Please keep in mind that the version you recieve may differ slightly from above examples and we hope you enjoy the surprise when you recieve your copy!
