Threshold Edition #4

Emii Alrai
Tear Jar - SOLD OUT

Tear Jar, 2021 by Leeds-based artist Emii Alrai is now available to purchase through Threshold Editions. This limited edition sculpture has been produced alongside Emii’s exhibition Deposition Layer, which is open until 12 December 2021.

This work has been modelled on two 1st Century glass perfume vessels that were found in Pompeii, and which Emii saw at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli while undertaking an In-ruins residency in Calabria, Italy. The sculpture is a cast vase-like object moulded from a date that sits neatly within a hand-made steel armature that is fixed to the wall. Armatures are a signature sculptural device within Emii’s practice which is informed by inherited nostalgia, geographical identity and post-colonial museum practices of collecting and displaying objects.

The vessel in Tear Jar is made from Jesmonite, a resin based material and coated in copper leaf which has oxidised to give it it’s beautiful verdigris colour. These same materials were used Alrai’s outdoor sculpture for Deposition Layer at Threshold.
