Deposition Layer
An Archaeology of Memory
Emii Alrai and Saad Maqbool
Limited edition publication with risograph print
Deposition Layer: An Archaeology of Memory is a conversation piece between Emii and her friend Saad Maqbool. The text documents a discussion in the lead up to Emii’s exhibition at Threshold and explores their ideas and feelings around memory, void, and what consitutes the histories that we situate ourselves in. Emii and Saad share interests around material decay and how memory is re-situated in a museological context.
Emii Alrai is an artist based in Leeds, mainly working with large scale sculpture and installation. Her practice is informed by nostalgia, geographical identity and post-colonial museum practices of collecting and displaying objects. Saad Macbool is a creative practitioner, tinkerer, and big-book reader, interested in digital futures and museums. Saad is currently working towards a PhD at the University of York looking into how technology might be used to generate nuanced narratives of the past and how we can engage with destruction and material decay.
